Publishing
PANGAEA is operated by WDC-MARE as an Open Access library for georeferenced data from basic research on earth and environment. The system also is a publishing system for data inventories not available through conventional publications (e.g. monitoring). During the publication process, data are handled similar to the established process of publication with submission including a metadescription, formatting rules, abstract, archiving with lead time for proof-read, defining a citation, registration and final publication. Data citations are mirrored to library catalogs and metasystems. A peer-review for data publications in under discussion.
Scientific primary data related to publications can be archived as supplementary data to the reference given. Archiving in established digitial libraries is the prefered way for data submitted with research papers. It assure consistency due to standard formats and thus a widespread distribution via portals and comprehensive compilations in future research.
A limited number of data sets can be grouped to citable entities, having its own persistent identification using the DOI system. It is one of the major efforts of WDC-MARE with PANGAEA to establish a reliable and usefull data citation in marine research and to integrate the way of handling data into the well established way for conventional publications. Any project and individual scientist is invited to make use of the PANGAEA library and its functionality to publish data.
