METROL

Methane fluxes in ocean margin sediments: microbiological and geochemical control

Homepage: http://www.metrol.org

Funding organisation: EU (EVK3-CT-2002-00080)

Type: Integrated project (IP)

Runtime: 2002-2005

Coordination: Christian Borowski, Max Planck Institute for Marine Microbiology, Bremen

Data curator: Hans-Joachim Wallrabe-Adams, MARUM

METROL data sets, archived in the data library PANGAEA®

Project summary

METROL aimed to explore the microbiological and geochemical controls of methane in the oceans in order to quantify current methane fluxes and evaluate the effect of environmental change on sea floor methane release. The project has contributed critical data and new results to predict the future impact of seafloor methane for global climate change.

Data archiving at WDC-MARE

Data management was carried out at the University of Bremen (MARUM branch of WDC-MARE) in cooperation with the project office and the data librarian of the information system PANGAEA. Existing data from those regions of interest were also added to the METROL data archive. METROL was a project within the OMARC cluster.
